Commencing in the late 1800’s
Middlebro’ & Stevens LLP is a full-service, general practice law firm with long-standing ties to Owen Sound and Grey County.
Middlebro’ & Stevens LLP has its roots in Grey County commencing in the late 1800’s with William Sora Middlebro’, King’s Counsel, who practiced in the late 1800’s to the 1940’s when he passed away. Charles Christopher Middlebro’, Queen’s Counsel, who practised alone before and after the Second World War, then became a partner with Harold L. Van Wyck when he moved from Hanover, Ontario. The firm became “Middlebro’ & Van Wyck” from the mid-1940’s to 1963 when Charles Christopher passed away. John H. E. Middlebro’ practiced law in 1970 with his cousin, Mr. R. P. Horton, Queen’s Counsel, as Horton & Middlebro’. Edmund J. (Ted) Stevens began working at Horton & Middlebro’ in 1976, and in 1979 the Firm became Horton, Middlebro’ & Stevens. In 1983, Edward P. Horton elected to practice law on his own. John H. E. Middlebro’ & Edmund J. Stevens moved to the firm’s current location in at 1030 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound, in October 1983 and continued a general partnership as Middlebro’ & Stevens LLP.
Kelly L. Graham joined the firm in as a lawyer in 1993. John D. Middlebro’ joined the firm as a lawyer in the spring of 2001. John D. Middlebro’ and Kelly L. Graham were both admitted to partnership in 2005 with John H. E. Middlebro’ & Edmund J. Stevens. They practiced law together until John H. E. Middlebro’ passed away in 2013. Nicholas A. G. Lovell and Alexander M. Wade joined the Firm as lawyers in 2015 and 2016 respectively, both of whom are 2nd-generation lawyers born to long-time local practitioners David Lovell and Pierre Wade.
In November of 2018, long-time Wiarton solicitor and friend, Peter Pegg invited the Firm to practice in his former location on Berford Street. The Firm opened its second office location to better serve its Bruce County clients.
The Firm continued with the three remaining partners until 2020 when Kelly Graham departed and passed after a short illness in mid-2020. On 1 July 2020, the Firm was pleased to admit associate lawyers Nicholas Lovell and Alexander Wade to partnership.
Most recently, Ted Stevens retired from the practice of law on 31 December 2023 after 47 years of service to the community. In July 2024, the Firm welcomed Samantha A. M. Peters as its newest associate lawyer.
The Firm now continues its long practice as a four-lawyer partnership with a wide breadth of legal expertise and local knowledge, with office locations in both Owen Sound and Wiarton, Ontario.
